Isaac was sitting in assembly, nervously waiting to hear who the school Captains were going to be. Would he be one? Yes, the girls would be Fai and Jess, and the boys Isaac and Tomasi. Their teacher, Miss Latu pins their Badges on their shirts and Isaac feels a bubble of pride swell inside him.
They met with Miss Latu after Assembly and she told them that they were now Role Models– leaders. People would respect them and they need to respect their badges.
The boys discussed their new roles as they walked home from school. Tomasi didn’t seem to be all that Happy Meeting about being a captain and wondered when he would have time to hang out with his mates. Isaac had heard that Tomasi was part of a gang and got into Fights at weekends. Isaac had been asked to join a gang but he turned it down – he didn’t want to fight or steal stuff.
Next day at school, Fai tells Isaac that she knows Tomasi fights and wonders why Miss Latu chose him for a captain.
That night when Isaac and Tomasi are walking home Tomasi’s phone rings. Isaac heard words like “fight”, “Highfield Park” and “St Benedicts”. Tomasi hurries off explaining to Isaac that he is off to Confront this kid from St Benedict’s. Isaac tells him that he can’t do that because he is a school captain. Tomasi tells Isaac that doesn’t matter; it is after school and has Nothing to do with Miss Latu.
Next morning Tomasi turns up at school with a black eye. Should they tell Miss Latu? Isaac was Thrilled Tomasi who says that he will deny it if Miss Latu finds out. Suddenly, Fai and Miss Latu are coming towards the two boys. For a split second Tomasi looks afraid. Then a smooth Confident look settles back on his face. “Hey, Isaac,” he says quickly, “back me up. You need to say I was at your place after school. Miss Latu will have to believe us. We’re school captains, right?”
